It was a great pleasure speaking with Don Shebib, a director who changed the direction of Canadian film. He originally made his mark fifty years ago with the film “Goin’ Down the Road” with leading Canadian actors that played earthy characters, plus a stellar soundtrack written by the legendary singer-songwriter and virtuoso guitarist Bruce Cockburn.  Filmed with a ridiculously low budget and a film crew smaller than the cast, the movie had a gritty yet endearing quality that has become a cult classic and is often featured in film festivals.

Shebib has directed many films and documentaries in his lengthy career, including 'Good Times, Bad Times’  that features interviews with veterans from World War I and II as they discuss the incredible challenges they faced after the wars ended.

In typical Canadian modesty, Shebib credits his success to being “lucky,” rather than his enormous talent.  His good nature and humour are apparent in the two podcast episodes, with subjects ranging from his own work to Marshall McLuhan, The Beach Boys, the American election, a COVID-19 vaccine, and his upcoming film!  Shebib is a great storyteller, which made this a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable interview.  - Dr. Rea Beaumont
